Monta Vista had a challenging meet against a tough competitor, Wilcox, on Thursday March 15. Wilcox varsity boys’ and girls’ teams have not lost a dual meet in years–I know that they were 6-0 both of the last two years, I’m not sure how long that streak is going on! Plus we had a few extra challenges which are a little unique to Monta Vista as in addition to some illness, we had to endure conflicts with robotics, yearbook and quantum mechanics workshops…the challenges associated with a lot of overachievers! In any case, we get to see where Monta Vista may be in the near future if we continue to work hard–because the difference is not as great as you might think. In the meantime, we lost all 4 team competitions–the results are attached as a download. (These results are not as complete as we usually get. Wilcox ran the meet using hand timing so we only have the top three places in each event.)
There were several standout performances, including Jenny Xu running a 3200 time that is in the top 10 times so far in the Central Coast Section, Arvind Rao winning the 400 while Kevin Bishop and Michael Lu went 1-3 in the 800, high hurdlers Donald Swen and Nicole Phan took first in FS and JV divisions, Sayali Khare took 2 jumping points from an always tough group of Wilcox jumpers, Emma Seyer scored 6 points for the JV girls in the throws while Lavinia Fung and Rhea Choudhury went 1-2 and 1-3 in the JVG triple and long jumps. The MV FS and JVG teams both gave strong challenges to Wilcox; a few more points here and there could have lead to things going the other way. The frosh-soph boys outscored Wilcox 45-27 in the 8 individual running events, lead by Donald’s win in the 65mH, and a sweep of the top spots in the distance events (Rohan Choudhury in the 800, Emilio Torres-Gonzalez’ in the 1600 and Anand Rao in the 3200)–so the difference between MV and Wilcox does continue to shrink!
The team did great!
On another note…Ezra Gordon was at the Willow Glen invite for part of the day taking photos and he dropped these by yesterday…check out the team photos section, there are some great photos, as always!
