Monta Vista Cross Country has ‘Week Zero’ in the books! From Monday, August 7 to Saturday, August 12 MVXC17 had twenty to fifty runners come to our practice sessions with a lot of good energy. We had our first set of hill repeats at Linda Vista, our first tour of Matadors’ Point, and for the adventurous we held our first threshold workout with sets of ‘Matador Ks’. MVXC17 looks like a high-energy, happy, hard-working team that is ready to roll!
The photos on this post are from this past Week Zero. Looking good!
If you missed the first week of pre-season practice, and are planning on joining…don’t worry! We call it Week Zero for a reason. Week One starts on Monday, August 14. We will catch you up!
First Day of School/First Day of Practice
The first day of school, August 14, is also the first day of practice. Cross-country practice meets every day in the home grand stands on the track, 20 minutes after school lets out, and lasts for two hours.
Everyone interested in joining MVXC should come to the first meeting on Monday the 14th at 3:20pm. After coach is done welcoming us to the team, everyone who has completed athletic clearance will start practice. Everyone who is not yet cleared will then go see the trainer, Javier Margarito, to get cleared. No one is allowed to practice with the team until all clearance procedures are complete and Javier has signed you off on-line. All clearance procedures are posted here.
Getting Your Athletic Clearance
Procedures for athletic clearance are here.
FAQs about being cleared…
Q: Can I give my physical form to my coach?
A: No, sorry, the coaches may not accept physical forms. You must turn those in to the trainer, Javier Margarito, during the hours he is available.
Q: I can’t get an appointment with my doctor for a long time. Can I practice in the meantime? What should I do?
A: Sorry, you can’t practice until you bring in a physical form signed by your doctor. If your doctor does not have any appointments available, you may go to a walk-in or urgent care clinic. Most of these clinics can give you an acceptable physical examination on the spot. Make sure that your physical form is signed by an M.D., not a nurse or medical practitioner, even if certified; the form must be signed by an M.D.
Q: I hear that MVXC is awesome, and I want to join the team, but I just got talked into joining now. Am I too far behind to catch up with everyone else?
A: You have given yourself a challenge, but if you want this bad enough, you can do it! Truly! Cross country is a sport for everyone who is willing to show up every day and work hard. MVXC values grit. If you have not been running this summer, the first few weeks will be tough, we can’t change that, but if you are willing to work hard you will be fine. We value grit and work ethic and team spirit as much or more than talent. Come join us, don’t be intimidated!
Q: When is the last day to join the team?
A: Seniors, juniors and sophomores must be cleared by Javier by the end of the day Friday, August 18. We will give freshman a bit more time, but freshmen should still come talk to coach this week if there is interest in joining MVXC.
Parents: Parent Meeting and Monta Vista Athletic Boosters
Parents, welcome back to the MVXC family! If your child is new to Monta Vista High School and Monta Vista Cross Country, welcome to the MVXC family! Cross country is the very best sport for high school athletes. You will see!
Our 2017 Parent Meeting will be at 6:15pm sharp in the Student Union (Cafeteria) on August 30. We look forward to seeing you there!
In the meantime…could you please take a moment to join the Monta Vista Athletic Boosters in support of your athlete? We know you have a lot going on, and we would appreciate you taking care of this now. Last season 100% of our parents joined MVAB in support of cross country and their child, however this does take a number of emails and phone calls–it’s so easy to put this off and forget.
Monta Vista Athletic Boosters does so much for our school’s athletic program. Of your tax deductible contribution, 61% goes directly back to cross country, and most of the rest goes to support cross country indirectly by supporting our trainer and other department-wide activities. In addition, the Boosters have purchased our beautiful canopies, hydration systems, carts, and uniforms.
Please go to the Boosters’ Site and join today!
Parents, see you at the meeting on the 30th!
