The track season is up and running as our team has the first week of work together in the books!
Every day we have the opportunity to make a deposit in our training bank, and this team made an effort starting day one. After a ‘quick’ greeting on Monday, we broke into event groups and were working–sprints/jumps/hurdles getting in some repeats on the track, throwers with their first trip into the shot ring, and distance off to get some hill repeats. Over the course of the week the sprinters were off to get some hills of their own, distance runners got their first taste of the track, and even the throwers were doing some jumping. It was a great start to the season, and this team looks very good already!
SOME STATISTICS
Right now our roster is sitting at 114 athletes, 55 girls and 59 boys–very balanced. This includes some assumptions about kids joining us from winter sports, so there are certainly some adds and drops to come.
As the winter sports wind down, don’t hesitate to encourage your friends on those teams to come join us. Our team looks really good this year, and we are coming off a strong 2018 season that saw our frosh-soph boys go 6-0 in league and dominate the league championships, while our varsity girls took a narrow second place in the league championships. This season could build upon that success! And historically, for athletes in other sports such as soccer, we have sent kids back to their winter sports faster and stronger than when they joined track. Let’s see if we can welcome a few more people!
WELCOME NEW COACHES
Welcome to the additions to our track and field coaching group…Stephanie Ekeh joins Monta Vista to coach the jumpers. Coach Stephanie jumped for Oak Grove, De Anza (where she still holds the all-time triple jump record) and San Francisco State before coming to Monta Vista as a coach. Tennyson Heen, who is also the Monta Vista football team’s defensive coordinator, has signed on to coach our throwing group. Also, Irina Stiasny is back to help with physical therapy and training twice a week. Welcome, coaches!
PARENTS
Please don’t forget to join Monta Vista Boosters, and support our team and athletes! And remember to mark your calendars for our track and field parent meeting on Tuesday, February 12.
