You don’t have to be in honors Calc to figure out that (28 medals + two championships) (sunset on the beach) = a great afternoon for MVXC!
The Monta Vista girls continued their string of excellent performances, winning the Varsity Girls’ championship at the Artichoke Invitational! For the first third of the race, the Paly girls were right there and looked to have a slight lead over the MVXC squad. However, as the race went on (and the V girls dealt with Cougar Hill), MVXC showed two things: We know how to run smart, pacing ourselves over the course of a race, and that our team has the fitness to earn a nice victory! Paly fought well, will be training hard, and will be back at Leagues and Sections, so our girls are going to have to work to run down some green uniforms again! Five of the MV varsity girls placed in the top 25 at the meet.
The Varsity-B girls and the Frosh-Soph girls also had good days, with the Varsity-B girls taking second place in their division and F-S taking 7th. Kirsten Do, Risako Tanida, Lena Chen, Hita Bhagat, Valerie Lo and Namrata Sumbramanian all went home with medals hanging from their necks—their first high school XC medals for many of these athletes!
The boys’ lineups were unfortunately hit harder than the girls’ by SAT testing, but even with a makeshift Varsity team, MVXC scored a respectable 7th place finish. Rohan Choudhury and Zach Patti both won top-25 medals. The boys’ Varsity-B team reaped the benefit of SATs as senior athletes came straight from dominating their tests to dominate the Half Moon Bay XC course! The boys scored a division victory, with Ajay Rajamani, Jeffrey Harrison, Steven Ting, Anand Rao, Collin Marcroft, Malcolm Flint and Kevin Krause all winning medals. The Frosh-Soph boys finished 4th, with Brent Mogensen and Liam McNeil both medaling and Lucas Tao barely missing the medal podium in 27th.
The growing strength and depth of our boys’ team was demonstrated at this invitational. MVXC had 10% more athletes finish faster than 15 minutes on the Half Moon Bay course this year compared to last year; your coaches think that is because you are a better TEAM this year, working together harder and more consistently as a group. There is more to come for you. The girls had a 60% increase in times under 17 minutes! We are really proud of what you are doing as a team! You are working hard, both as individuals, and as a group!
Some huge PRs were set on Saturday! Jeffrey Harrison dropped 1:31 from last year, Zach dropped 1:40, John Hsaio 1:53; and Salvador Torres-Gonzalez recorded a monster drop of more than 5 minutes to get under 15 minutes with a 14:48! Julia and Chloe continued their string of big PRs, improving their times by more than a minute! All these improvements were impressive on another very warm October afternoon.
After the invitational, we headed over to Half Moon Bay State Park for a couple hours on the beach! Thank you very much to Mrs. Marten for arranging for our parents to get into the Park without having to pay for parking, and for picking up sandwiches for everyone (especially the meatball subs, I think, as those sandwiches did not last long!).
