Monta Vista came to play under the lights at Top 8, and with some great weather and solid competition we had a memorable night on Saturday, April 23.
From top to bottom, Monta Vista scored good performances. A highlight was Eliot Lubomirsky’s PR in the 400m, recording a 51.14–just a blink from recording a 50-point! Both Andy Fang and Nitin Subramanian scored PRs in the 1600m. Evelyn How recorded a season best 12.83 in the 100m, and Kelly Bishop unleashed a monster performance in the 1600m, notching a 5:01.61 which was her best mark in more than two years!
The Monta Vista 4x400m relay teams saved some highlights for the late night. As the dark really settled in and the meet directors brought out flashing red warning lights for the break line, the frosh-soph team started us off with a solid 3:44.93. The varsity girls team of Alisha Gao, Claire Ettinger, Reema Apte and Kelly Bishop put up a 4:12.73, highlighted by Reema’s charge on the inside to pass two other teams and set up Kelly for a nice closing leg. And the varsity boys’ team of sophomore Derek Zheng, Andy Ma, Scott Gregory and Eliot Lubomirsky had a sparkling 3:28.94, the fastest time by a Monta Vista squad in at least eight years!
At the end of the meet, Kelly holds the 6th best times in CCS for both the 800m and 1600m, Eliot stands at 16 in the 400m, while Evelyn and Bennett Zheng both are in the top 30 over all CCS in the 100m and 3200m. Our relay teams are in great shape, with the girls at 15 in CCS and the boys sitting at 9th!
This meet was a great prep for SCVALs, which will be back here in Los Gatos in three weeks. It’s very different to run at the end of the day; because it is cold we need to warm up more than usual, we need to eat and drink in consideration of a late race, and maybe mentally prepare differently. This was great practice–and great results!
