MVXC finished a first week of group running since COVID-19. MVXC had the first practice of any Monta Vista athletic team since early March…and so far we are meeting the challenge.
We followed a lot of careful rules that we never even thought about half a year ago–social distancing, masks, more care regarding water bottles, no shared equipment, limited number of athletes and coaches, etc. This is all a challenge and it’s easy to be frustrated. However, our satisfaction is dependent upon the comparison we choose. If we want to compare last week’s practice to our first week of cross country in August 2019, with 80 athletes and no worries except what crazy workout coach might pick, then this was disappointing. If we choose to compare this week to the middle of last April, then this week felt GREAT! We can choose our comparison, we can CHOOSE to be happy. I choose to be thrilled to see twelve fine athletes, face-to-masked-face!
This week is the first step back to a competitive Fall season. We need to ace this first test, and so far we are. No surprise to this coach–I think we have the best team, anywhere, and I believe we will rise to every challenge until COVID-19 is part of history!
