Congratulations to Sabrina Hung for completing her first steeplechase!
On July 8, Sabrina went down the road to De Anza College to compete in the Junior Olympics. Sabrina ran the 2000m Steeplechase, and she won her age group–OK, she was the only competitor in her age range but that his not her fault, you can only race the people that show up! By winning her age group, Sabrina earned a spot to nationals–incredible.
Simply competing in the steeple is a big deal; people who have done this tell me that the steeple is the most exhausting race out there. I have to take their word for that–I am too terrified to try the steeple!
I think Sabrina challenging herself to try something new and challenging is admirable. Not everyone will put themselves out there and make a big physical effort, commitment to training and take a chance on something like the steeple. Sabrina’s effort says a lot of positive things about her character. I believe that these kind of efforts translate into broader character growth, well beyond athletics. Good job, Sabrina!
(By the way, this is the second year in a row MVXC/MVTF had an athlete try the steeple–Maddy Yip ran this last year. Two years in a row that a MVXC athlete qualified for nationals in the steeple!)
If you get a chance…track down Sabrina and ask her about her experience. I think you will be impressed!
