Great Team Day
Monta Vista Track & Field traveled to Leland High School this past Saturday for the 19th annual Quicksilver Invitational! As a whole team, we had a really great day with several highlights. It was quite a long day, with the format of running the entire frosh/soph meet followed by the varsity meet, but it was worth it to see all of the smiling faces! Both frosh/soph teams along with boys varsity cracked the top 5 in team scores for their respective divisions and varsity girls almost cracked the top 10 with an 11th place finish.
It really was a day of highs and lows, which I think is bound to happen with a really long meet like this one. Our frosh/soph team really got things rolling in the morning session, but as the sun began it’s abuse in the early afternoon, I think we really started to feel it. The end of the frosh/soph meet and beginning of the varsity meet was definitely the hottest part of the day and we just haven’t had much chance to get used to that. So please don’t hang your head if you did not have the best performance! I also don’t want those that had a “bad day” or a “bad event” to think that they’re alone or that nobody cares – we all care. Of course it’s fun to cheer and yell and be super supportive when things go our way, but what I think our team does really well with is supporting each other when things don’t go our way. Keep that up, because it’s so important to be there for your friends in those times when we just need someone to help us not feel so alone.
Stanford Shoutout
I would be remiss if I did not mention that the varsity girls were missing some point scorers to the Stanford Invite taking place last Friday and Saturday, which probably would have likely bumped up our team placing at Quicksilver would they have been there. We also had one boy at Stanford, so I’ll go ahead and shout him out first; Ryan Shen took top honors in the boys long jump at Stanford against a national field! He also placed 9th in the triple jump and 10th in the high jump. Winning an event at this meet is a big deal, so nice work, Ryan! On the girls side, Lelani Laruelle pulled out a 2nd place finish in high jump. Clara fan pulled off a 6th place finish in the triple jump as well as a 9th place finish in the long jump. Dylan Hwang brought home a 9th in the triple jump. Thank you all for representing your team so well at Stanford!
Girls’ Performances at Quicksilver
Medal-winning performances for frosh/soph girls at Quicksilver were Allie Rummelhoff with a win in the triple jump and shot put, plus a 3rd place finish in the discus throw (two meet records, plus it was her birthday!), and Viha Gopalan placing 3rd in the triple jump and 5th in the long jump. On the varsity side, we had four 5th place finishes with Anika Bhandarkar in the 1600m, Zoe Laruelle in the 300m hurdles, Lauren Moore in the triple jump, and Siran Gao in the 3200m. Great work, ladies!
Boys’ Performances at Quicksilver
Medal winners on the boys frosh/soph side were Adam Abdelrahman winning the shot put and placing 2nd in the discus throw, Constantine Chua with 3rd in the 65m hurdles and 4th in the 300m hurdles, Riu Yamada with a 6th place in the 800m (just edging out his teammate, Kento Murase by under 3 tenths of a second!), Eddie Fan with a 3rd place in discus throw, a 5th place finish in the shot put, and 6th place in the long jump and triple jump. Additionally, our 4x100m relay team of Jake Tong, Chua, Aaryan Samanta, and Jeffrey Choy took top honors and our 4x400m team of Samanta, Yamada, Chua, and Choy snagged a 5th place finish. On the varsity side, Darren Lin won the triple jump, Jayden Tang took home 2nd in both the 100m and 200m, Tanay Parikh placed 2nd in the 800m, and Graham Ischo took 5th in shot put. Nice work, gentlemen!
Next up is our dual meet at home against Fremont High School on Wednesday, April 8th! After this, we’ll only have one more dual meet!
