On a ridiculously cold Tuesday afternoon, the Monta Vista track & field team opened the league campaign against cross-town rival Cupertino.

The Monta Vista team checked out the ‘tino track with a little envy.  The Cupertino track is brand new and really beautiful!  The best news is, the same company that build ‘tino’s new home is now working on the Monta Vista track…so, next year, we have our own posh digs!

One drawback to the new facility is that all the trees are about 5’ tall!  So with the wind blowing from the North, we were all freezing.  But despite that, we got to work, running/jumping/throwing.

Team results were as follows:

Varsity Boys:  Cupertino 76, Monta Vista 50

Varsity Girls:  Monta Vista 71, Cupertino 54

Frosh-Soph Boys:  Monta Vista 64, Cupertino 49

JV Girls:  Monta Vista 51, Cupertino 0

There were some pretty dramatic changes from prior years.  Last year, the Varsity girls did not win a single dual meet and now we have one!  Big changes came in the field events; last year in discus, shot and the high jump, the varsity girls did not score a single point.  Against Cupertino, lead by Kiersten Chuc (who won discus with a throw of 66-02.5), Emma Seyer (won shot 24-07) and Hannah Ho (high jump winner with 4’10”), Monta Vista took 23 of 27 possible points!  Sophomore Karen Feng continued her speedy way around the track winning both the 100M and 200M races, and Senior Ryan Chui joined her as the only other double winner, taking the 110M and 300M hurdle races.  Kevin Bishop, Christina Aguila, Allison Win (greatest track name ever!), Darren Yau, and freshmen Jenny Xu and Julia Chang also won varsity races, scoring 5 or more varsity points each.  (Varsity boys also won the 4x100M and 4x400M relays).

JV girls scoring was lead by Rhea Choudhury’s 9 points (which includes a TJ PR), Sherry Lin’s 6 points from LJ and TJ, and 5 points each from Risako Tanida, Melissa Foster, Nicole Phan and Catalina Huang.  Donald Swen won the 65M hurdles, took second in the 300H hurdles and added a point for 3rd place in the long jump to pace the frosh-soph scoring, while Steven Lim, YoungJean Han, Nima Kiyarash, Rockish Ambati and Emilio Torres-Gonzalez all scored wins.  One area of concern for our frosh-soph boys is a complete lack of throwers or high jumpers; we were outscored 16-0 in those events.  A few more athletes in those events could be a lot of help later in the season!  It’s not too late for football, basketball and wrestling athletes to come on over and join up…or for other track athletes to take a shot at these events!
