We have lots of news to get caught up on!
Azusa Distance Meet of Champions
On Saturday May 28, 18 Monta Vista distance runners lit up an already hot track, recording 14 PRs in a single day! Highlights included seeing Isabel LaPlain get under 6 and Jeffrey Xu under 5 in the 1600m for the first time ever; Brent recording a 4:37 to get under coach’s old high school PR; and Justin running his 800m in 2:09.64 (in the last 5 years, the only MV freshmen under 2:10 were Max Sawyer in 2014, Rohan Choudhury in 2012, and Takuto Doshiro in 2011–not a bad list to be a part of!).
Under the lights, we were all treated to a show as Bennett ran a massive PR in the rated 3200m FS boys race, running a 10:08, and Rohan closed with a 2:16 in his last 800m to notch a 9:23 in his own 3200 (a 10 second PR). Kelly and Jenny both went under the old Monta Vista 1600m record, with incredible 5:00 and 5:07 times. Both these times are among the best in California so far this season, and in the top 10 in our section!
On the way back from LA, we made a stop in McFarland, to see the high school and town and munch on tacos…an amazing trip!
Fremont Firebird Relays
Meanwhile in Northern California, Matador strength-and-power athletes were also putting on an exhibition. Hurdlers Nicole, Sabrina, Victoria, Alice and Annabel all recorded season-best marks, while Chatty flew through a 400 in 52 high–he is almost completely back from his soccer adventures! Sanat PRed in both shot and discus, and Namir in discus, while Anjini, Niveda, Gina and Rhea all had sprinting PRs. Akshara’s first high school mile race had been delayed as she recovered from injury, and she was clearly ready for the opportunity as her first high school mile race resulted in a 5:49 clocking!
The highlight of the Firebird meet was the performance of our high jumpers, as Sanjna and James swept the Varsity titles, and Ryan took home a 3rd in FS.
