At the Marathon Project race on December 20, 2020, Noah Droddy threw down a lightning fast 2:09:09–a three minute PR for the thirty year old runner. A few observations on this accomplishment, in no particular order…
This is the 9th fastest marathon ever run by an American!
Having a run like this in the middle of social isolation and a pandemic…is impressive. And shows that a person can be gritty and keep working towards a goal, even when things are very hard.
Noah never qualified for his high school State meet in Indiana; he developed into one of the best marathoners ever in America later. Running is a sport where hard work over a long period of time is more important than early success. Not that early success is a bad thing–but if you love running, and have a passion for running, you can end up achieving more than athletes that might be in front of you today. You just don’t know!
Noah did not go to a big D1 college–Noah went to a D3 school. It’s easy to get caught up in the hype of a big school, but you can find good coaching and supportive teams at any level. Nick Symmonds is another example (as well as our own Bridget Gottlieb). Smaller schools with strong programs and positive coaching can be better fits for runners that are still improving coming out of high school.
Many of you have ‘met’ Noah–well, the way we meet people during the pandemic, on Zoom. Noah was a guest speaker on the MVXC Zoom on June 12. He was awesome!
It’s great to see a great person and a friend of MVXC have an achievement like that. It’s nice when good things happen for good people. And Noah is a special guy.
Congrats, Noah Droddy!
