Teamwork makes the Dream work
Monta Vista Track & Field faced off against Fremont High School in our 4th installment of dual meet action this past Wednesday at Monta Vista. It was a hot, but beautiful day that saw many PRs, event wins, and a great showing up teamwork! We have spent some time in the weeks leading up to this meet going over the importance of lending a hand during our home meets to make sure that jobs aren’t left to just a small handful of people. This week, we exemplified exactly what I wanted – hurdles were put out on the track in swift fashion, trash and clothes were cleaned up off the field in record time, cones were gathered, and even better, I had many kids coming to ask me what more they could do to help. Keep up that attitude and good work! That’s a great quality to have as a human being.
Not only did we work together to put on a good meet, but we also worked together to win all four divisions! As we look forward to our last dual meet of the season, our Varsity teams are undefeated and our JVs teams each only have one loss. Let’s take this momentum and finish out the regular season strong!
Girls’ Performances
Our event winners on the JV side included Jasmine Zhao in the long jump, triple jump, and high jump, Melinda Zhao in the 1600m and 800m, Elaine Chen in the 100m hurdles, Naomi Hsu in the 3200m, and our 4x400m squad! For Varsity, winners were Gillie Ross in the shot put and discus throw, Katie Lee in the 100m and 200m, Clara Fan, Dylan Hwang, and Gabriella Slade all tied for 1st to sweep all points in the high jump, Fan also took the triple jump, Lelani Laruelle won the long jump, Anika Bhandarkar won the 3200m, and both relay teams took top honors! I will also give a shoutout to Zoe Laruelle in the 300m hurdles because she got 2nd by less than a hundredth of a second…that’s about as close to winning as you can get.
Boys’ Performances
On the boys JV side, Adam Abdelrahman won shot put and the discus throw, Eddie Fan won the triple jump, Ashwanth Sundaramoorthi won the 1600m and 800m, Constantine Chua won the 65m hurdles and the 300m hurdles, Max Shaykin won the 100m, Jeffrey Choy won the 200m, Kento Murase took the 3200m, and both relay teams came home victorious! For Varsity, winners included Ryan Shen in the high jump and long jump, Tanay Parikh in the 1600m and 800m, Jayden Tang in the 100m and 200m, Alex Frefel in the 110m hurdles and 300m hurdles, Ryan Liu in the 3200m, and our 4x400m relay team!
Next, we’ll send three athletes (Shen, Fan, and L. Laruelle) to the Arcadia Invitational, “Home of National Records”. This is an extremely high quality high school meet and I know our jumpers will represent well!
Next week is spring break, but we still have practice! We’ll send several kids to the CCS Top 8 Invite next Saturday at Los Gatos, so we need to make sure we’re not missing a beat just because it’s spring break.
