MVXC had a great first day of practice on Monday, August 7! More than 20 athletes and three coaches (Coach Flatow, Coach Sam, and Coach Ashley) were all there at 7am for a get-to-know you run out the RR tracks. Practice will continue to be held at 7am from Monday through Saturday for the next two weeks. At 9am, it’s satisfying to think that our workout is in the logbook and we have the entire day in front of us. It was already warming up at 9am when we left the track, so we think almost everyone appreciated the early start!
A few reminders that will help over the next couple of weeks:
- Set a glass of water next to our sink in the bathroom, and in the morning drink that water down as soon as we get up. We dry out overnight, so early hydration is important. Bring a bottle of water with you to practice.
- Have something light to eat. Our bodies want a few calories to be working on as we run. What would work for coach is a banana and a piece of bread or toast with some almond butter and honey. One of his running partners would put a spread of almond butter right on the banana to get protein and carbs in one bite, and although coach thinks that is psychotic, you be you. Try different things…your body is going to want some calories and protein to be at it’s best at 7am.
- Use the next two weeks to get some new shoes, if you have not done this already. Serious runners should get a new pair of trainers at the start and end of each track and each cross season–four pairs per year. This seems like a lot, but if an athlete is running even 30 miles a week, that’s over 1,500 miles per year. If a pair of shoes lasts 300-400 miles per pair, that’s four pairs to be safe. New shoes will help prevent injury. Running Revolution in Campbell has really good employees, well trained to help you get fitted for the right pair. A Runners Mind in Menlo Park is another option. Both stores will give you a discount if you tell them you are from Monta Vista high school. Please take care of this in the next couple of weeks…it is for your own health!
Hope to see you soon!
