A couple quick updates on MVTF NorCal action for week 8…
Saratoga Dual Meet
When we were going to school on March 22 and rain was coming down in buckets, it was hard to imagine that there would be a track meet that afternoon. Yet by 3pm, while it was still cold, the sky was cleaning over the track at Saratoga High School as the hurdles were being placed for Monta Vista’s second dual meet of the year.
The Monta Vista varsity girls’ 4×100 team opened with a blazing 50.63, currently the 6th best mark in CCS, and that started everything off on an upbeat note. Over the course of the afternoon we had season bests and PRs from sprinters (for example 100m PRs for sophomore Pranav Pata (12.32), Brooke Young (12.83) and senior Nanda Nayak (13.85)), from distance runners (such as 5:38 for Sanjana Borle in the 1600m, 11:54 for Triya Roy in the 3200, and Nitin Subramanian’s 10:29 in the 3200), and field eventers (including Reema Apte’s first 32′ triple jump, Zoe Wang’s first 31′ triple jump, and a 35’7″ PR for Douglas Huang in the shot).
At the end of the meet, the teams split results with Monta Vista winning the varsity girls’ and frosh-soph boys’ divisions while the varsity boys and junior varsity girls went down in defeat. Complete results are posted here. And there are photos here.
Saratoga ran a very nice and efficient meet, and were very good hosts; their coaches and athletes deserve our respect and appreciation.
Firebird Invitational
Monta Vista went down the street to the Firebird Relays and scored lots of medals, PRs and SRs in the morning rain and afternoon sun. The event kicked off with Monta Vista’s young shot putters taking the team title, accumulating a combined distance of 108’3.75″ to win by over 22′! Martin Xiao continued his strong season placing 5th individually with his 39’10” throw, and Eric Zheng and Henry Hodgkins went 35’2.75″ and 33’3″. After claiming their shot put medals they made their way to the discus cage and capped off the day with a 2nd place team finish, once again led by strong efforts from Eric, Martin and Henry.

On the track, we were focused with the sprinters were entered in only two races, the 400 and 100, and PRs and SRs were plentiful. Vivian Cheng and Ananya Rajagopal led things off for Monta Vista with PRs in the 400, going 67.57 and 69.66 respectively. Next up was Devin Pereira who kept the momentum going with a strong 68.91 to take 2nd in her heat with a charge to the finish. Not to be left out, Monta Vista boys 400 runners Vishal Koppuru and Eliot Lubomirsky both shined in the one-lap race. Vishal broke into the 55 second club with his 55.99, good for fourth in the F/S Boys division, and Eliot took third in the Varsity section with his SR and #2 best time 51.41 which should place him high in the CCS rankings.
