De Anza League Finals Rocks! | Monta Vista Running

The Monta Vista Cross Country team represented themselves with honor at the De Anza League Finals on October 30 at Crystal Springs.

There are some pretty incredible statistics to consider when our results are analyzed:

Of the top third of our runners, boys and girls combined, 19 of them had run league finals two years in a row. Of those 19 runners, 18—95%!!!—improved their times. Of the first six girls who ran both years, 5 of 6 improved their times. Think about that…a year of work and commitment and 95% of these runners saw improvement! What team does that? WE DO!
The 2012 MVXC boys showed amazing team depth and progress even compared to past MV squads. In 2010, seven MV boys got under 18 minutes in the league meet at Crystal Springs; in 2011, eight boys did; and in this year, we had 11 boys finish in less than 18 minutes! That’s a team!
The fastest five boys who ran leagues this year and last year improved by an average of 71 seconds each. Josh Cox and Coach both said that it is reasonable to set an annual goal of 30 to 60 seconds improvement on a 5K cross course. You guys exceeded that target! Now here is the challenge: Keep it up! If we assume an improvement of 45 seconds on the 2012 league finals times for each of the runners returning in 2013, the resulting times would have put 7 MVXC runners in the top 20 at every league meet for the past 3 years. The potential team combined time would be within seconds of the league champion team in every year. So keep working!
There were nine runners with more than a one minute improvement in their time recorded in the 2011 league finals: Lydia Seo, Chloe Li, John Hsaio, Zach Patti, Jeffrey Harrison, Kevin Krause, Rana Singh, Julia Chang, and Salvador Torres-Gonzalez.

So…great job everyone! Other team and individual highlights include—but are not limited to, there was lots of success to go around!—the following:

League championships by the JV girls’ and JV boys’ teams;
The varsity girls taking a strong second place finish and advancing to the CCS championships, with Jenny Xu taking 4^th place;
The varsity boys also qualifying for the CCS championships, in a true team effort with only a 38 second spread from our first through fifth runner;
Steven Lim and John Hsaio going 1-2 in the JV boys race, and Namrata Subramanian and Valerie Lo finishing 2-3 in the girls JV race.

Your coaches and teammates are so proud of what you have accomplished!
