Dear Monta Vista track and field family–
I apologize for being so far behind in my posts! Rustbuster and a lot of other planning really ate me up. So I’m going to try to catch up today…I do apologize as you guys have been working hard and the team does deserve the attention of mvrunning posts!
Buchanan Distance Classic
“Coach, I just get happy whenever I show up at anything called a ‘Distance Classic’!”
While many track nuts want to see every event contested, there are also the distance geeks who can think of nothing better than an afternoon full of back-to-back-to-back heats of the 1600m. Coach Flatow and two parents took a bunch of those kids three hours down the road to Clovis, California to the Buchanan Distance Classic. Held on the same track in the same (giant) stadium (wow, those Central Valley people have some money and they love their high school athletics) where the State meet has been held the last few years, we had a chance to get our racing legs tested once more against a bunch of Central Valley kids from schools we seldom race against (Monta Vista was the only school from CCS competing).
Derek Lee, Aravind Meyyappan and Andy Fang all had PRs, while several freshman also had PRs vs. their high school times. It was a solid day for all and a great distance running opener. Complete results are up on athletic.net.
How many people are going to think a great way to spend a Friday during break week is to get in a car, drive three hours, run as hard as you can, then drive back (even if you get pizza on the way home)? A lot of MVTF runners, that’s who!
Fourth Annual Monta Vista 400 Shootout
Tuesday, February 28, under slightly cold and imperfect conditions, we held our fourth annual 400 Shootout. This event was conceived by Coach John McKeeman, from his own high school track experiences. Here is a post about the background of the Shootout.
This year’s edition was another resounding success! I counted 47 personal records, not counting freshman and also trying to eliminate first-year runners. That is an unreal day! Champions for 2017 were Andy Ma and Kelly Bishop, and other headline worthy times included marks by Alisha Gao, Reema Apte, Eliot Lubomirsky and Scott Gregory.
The Shootout results are a tribute to hard work by our athletes in the first month of training, and also has us all excited about the potential for nice 4×4 relay results this season!
Results are online here for all eternity. And here is a link to Mr. Ma’s photo album for your FB posting pleasure!
Keep up the good work!
