Summer cross country conditioning is in full swing for MVXC! We have had 40 athletes out running during the past week…team spirit is looking good!
Summer running is the key to a strong cross country season–that is not a secret. There is nothing like two months of steady running to get you ready for the first formal practice in August! The real secret of summer running, I think, is what it can do for the way you feel when school starts. For the incoming freshmen, they get to know other new kids as well as make friends with older students…so when they are wandering around the halls of Monta Vista those first few weeks, they will see big ‘brothers’ and ‘sisters’ that they know from XC. For veterans, summer running is a chance to talk…and talk…and talk with your friends about school and parents and life and E-sports and music and anime and…well, anything.
If you have not found out about summer running yet–we are not trying to keep this a secret! Come to the Monta Vista track at 7am any day from Monday through Saturday (we start early to beat the heat). Give summer running a try!

How You Can Make Summer Running Better!
Things every athlete can do to make you and the team better…
- Be on time, arrive ready to run, don’t make the team wait for you!
- Say hello to people when you arrive, let them know you are happy to see them!
- Invite friends to join summer running…you are doing them a favor by introducing them to running!
- Introduce yourself to new people when they come to practice and let them know they are welcome. Remember how nervous you were on your first day?
- At least once a week or so, try running part of the run with someone who might be a little faster than you.
- Organize something fun for the team or part of the team…invite them to your house or suggest an activity.
- Organize a group to go buy new running shoes!
- Start a sharing/get-to-know-you circle.
- If you have a pool, organize an aqua-running party (ask coach).
- Show a new runner a new route.
- Ask a senior for advice (risky, I know).
