Monta Vista celebrated the De Anza League finals at Crystal Springs on November 1 by bringing home 3 ‘golds’–2 individual, 1 team–and sending both Varsity teams onwards to the Central Coast Section finals!

In the first race of the day, the Frosh-Soph boys finished with a strong second place–despite losing 3 of their top 5 runners (two frosh-soph runners competed in the Varsity race, and Shanmukh Challa turned an ankle–HARD–in a ditch in the back half of the race).  In the face of these obstacles, the team’s second place finish was very impressive.  Rohan Choudhury was the first MV F-S runner to finish with a 17:36, which was 21 seconds faster than his time at the SCVAL Preview–and the Preview race was run on a shorter Crystal course (due to bad running conditions last month)! Rohan’s finish was good for 8th place overall.   Ryan Bishop was close behind in 10th with a 17:47, also faster than his preview time on the short course!  Those were great efforts by both of MV’s top two runners.  The rest of the MV scorers were Zach Patti, Anand Rao and Steven Lim.   Looking at the results of the frosh-soph boys, there are many runners who have demonstrated the potential of being contributors to future CCS-caliber teams–today’s F-S race was not only a good race on it’s own, but also is an indication of a strong future for these runners as individuals and as a team.

The Monta Vista JV girls provided a clinic on racing as a team.  Leading the group was Julia Chang who saved her best for last as she ran her most impressive race of the year!  Julia took the lead right at the start of the race (a gutsy move at the Crystal Springs course), and then she continued to put pressure on the entire field as she lead the race from start to finish.  Winning a cross-country race is a rare treat, and the entire team shared in Julia’s victory!  Like the top freshman boys, Julia’s 21:32 was more than a 20 second improvement from her time on the shorter Crystal course that MV ran a month ago at the SCVAL preview.  The results these young runners got are a tribute to their hard work during this cross-country season.

The JV girls team demonstrated the strength of pack running as they finished in strong, fast groups–Chloe Li and Alice Johnson finishing 7-8, Ellen Tang and Catalina Huang 10-11, and Lena Chen, Sameera Vemulapalli and Kiersten Chuc 16-17-18.   Monta Vista not only won the JV race, but MV had 8 girls in before the 4th runner on the second team has over the line!   Great job, ladies!

Kevin Bishop provided the individual highlight of the Varsity boy’s race, scoring a 2nd place finish with a 15:48.  Shivam Khanna and freshman Emilio Torres-Gonzales also finished in the top 20, and Ajay Rajamani and Michael Lu completed the Varsity scoring.  Despite finishing a disappointing 5th place in leagues, the Varsity team still qualified for the Central Coast Section meet based on team combined time–which demonstrates the strength of the DAL this year, as it appears that 6 of the 7 varsity teams all have qualified for the sectional finals.   Guys, you are back in CCS!–let’s make that a fantastic race!

The Varsity girls team had plenty of notable performances.  Freshman Jenny Xu put the cherry on top of a fabulous first season at Monta Vista with an individual league championship, running an 18:56 to win her race by 21 seconds!  Senior Pearl Law also capped off an amazing first year in cross-country with a 9th place finish, and Bridget Gottleib gave Monta Vista three runners in the top 10.  Kirsten Do and Risako Tanida finished strong to give Monta Vista a second place finish as a team, only 12 points out of first place.  The second place finish allows the MV women to advance to the CCS finals this year, after narrowly missing the year before.  The team looks forward to a strong performance in CCS, and together with the girls on the JV team, the stage is set for many more good years!

The JV boys placed three runners in the top 10–Bumpei Maeda, coming off injury, took a strong 3rd place, and Stephen Ting and Collin Marcroft scored 6th and 10th.  Captain Vikrant Marathe finished in 13th, and Sanjeev Dwarka was MV’s 5th finisher in the top 20, as the boys completed a great MV day by bringing home a 2nd place team finish.

Monta Vista’s coaches could not be more proud of this great group of runners!  The team worked hard all year, and the results are a testament to the team’s commitment to working hard and supporting each other.  We are not done with this season yet–CCS finals are on November 12!–and the future is so bright, the team should all be wearing shades! 🙂

Ezra Gordon was out taking photographs and we will have the results in the gallery in a few days.
