I saw a couple ideas that I thought I might share for MVTF athletes at home, bouncing off walls this weekend.
Some Great Olympic Track Races On Line
A few minutes of watching races is always fun 🙂
Michael Johnson breaking 200m and 400m Olympic records in 1996…only man to even win both in a single Olympics…check out the relaxed face, just like Coach John tells you!
Kelly Holmes winning the 800m at the 2004 Olympics in Athens (the prior link is higher quality but there is music instead of the live commentary…this link is poorer video but awesome commentary during the race, I think I like it better! Watch as they replay after the finish later, and they keep the camera on her as she waits for the result to be posted. The commentators love her!) …Kelly looks like she is out of it but there is nothing but grit to pull that race out! Gotta love the 800m. Kelly then came back to complete an impressive double, winning the 1500m (I can’t find a good video of that one but I love the British announcer).
Also in 2004, Hickam El Guerrouj wins his first 1500m gold. Amazing finish with Bernard Lagat, two runners who just did not want to lose as both trade leads! Fastest last 800m in a 1500m race, ever. Wow.
Sebastian Coe is a hero for track athletes of a certain age and the 1980 Olympic 1500 final is part of his legend…his last 100m was covered in 12.1 seconds!
For the hurdlers, here is Edwin Moses. Edwin Moses was the man. Check out his pre-race routine at the 1984 Olympics final…what, me nervous? The entire track world had a collective stroke at what looked like a false start…
Usain Bolt stakes his claim as GOAT as he runs away from a stacked field in the 2008 100m Olympic final.
David Rudisha was a beast, and this is unreal: A wire-to-wire victory for a 800m Gold medal, setting a WR in the process…49.1 seconds for the first 400m!
Let Me Off This Planet
I can’t get you off the planet, but you can see what that would be like! Get virtual tours of the International Space Station.
Read A Play Out Loud
Ok this idea might seem like it is too far out there, but hear me out.
Are you and your parents driving each other nuts? Rather than go to separate rooms, read a play out loud. I thought this was such a cool idea, and I know that some of you and your parents are willing to throw yourselves into something that looks adventurous and fun! The theatre critic for the NY Times had the idea to read a play out loud, and he has some suggestions of plays for you too. Maybe one of these plays will appeal to you tonight, rather than resume the endless scroll through Netflix…if you try this, I want to hear about it!
(Love theatre but just can’t make yourself read out loud with siblings and parents? The Brits are streaming theater performances you can watch!)
Coach, Just Let Me Veg Out
OK…just cue up the shark cam from the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Be safe and healthy! I miss you guys and I’m thinking of you.
