Some alumni updates…

Rohan Choudhury/MVXC-TF15

Rohan was awarded the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Ray Adkinson award, voted on by all the league’s coaches and given to the senior who best exemplifies the conference’s high ideals during his association with SCIAC cross country.  In the announcement of the award, the SCIAC said:

The 2018 recipient of the Ray Adkinson Award is Rohan Choudhury of Caltech. Rohan is a Computer Science major from Cupertino, Calif. Since his arrival on campus as a freshman, he has been a mainstay in the top-five for Caltech. His race efforts have helped the Beavers to program-record finishes within the SCIAC and NCAA West Region and lowered the school record for top-five average time from 27:14 when he enrolled at Caltech to 26:39 as a senior. A leader who has helped the program grow significantly on and off the trails, Rohan has also maintained a 3.9 GPA to go along with his athletic success. He has spent his summers working at UC Berkeley (AI Research) and Caltech (Center for Data Driven Discovery). He has also had two articles on machine learning published in scientific journals. He is in the process of applying to PhD programs in Computer Science.

There is also a very nice video interview with Rohan on the CalTech XC site (I like seeing the Monta Vista in the graphic during the interview).

Think about Rohan (and the other athletes below) next time someone says ‘you have to choose whether to focus on academics or athletics’.  Umm, no…you can do two things well at the same time!  Rohan earned a place at CalTech and was a four-year varsity athlete at MV, and he was a four-year varsity athlete at CalTech while earning a degree in CS–and I have heard that CalTech is challenging academically, maybe almost as much as MV ;).  You can do more than one thing at the same time!  Also…

Bridget Gottlieb/MVXC-TF14

Bridget is finishing up her Masters in Public Health at Johns Hopkins University.  Bridget also runs for the Hopkins cross-country and track teams; Hopkins is heading to NCAA regionals next week (same day as CCS!).  Bridget has been a team captain at Hopkins, and has won athletic and academic All-American honors during her time at Hopkins and been part of NCAA national championship teams.

MVXC has a very proud tradition of simultaneous athletic and academic achievement, and I have a much longer list than this list.  We can come back and check in with our alumni any time (not only those that kept running we want to hear from anyone) (and for those alumni we have lost touch with please reach out to me!).

Congratulations, alumni!
