The Monta Vista cross country team headed over to Lynbrook High School for the first meet of the SCVAL circuit. The traditional opener at Central Park in Santa Clara was canceled because of site issues (and we may never get that site back, BTW).
The Lynbrook course is short (2.1 miles) and flat and the MVXC team made it look quick. The varsity boys were in the first race and got the team started with a solid 6th place finish out of the 14 SCVAL teams*, with Rohun Agrawal, Andrew Richardson and Nitin Subramanian leading the way, all under 5:30 per mile pace; this was a really nice team performance by these three leaders. The varsity girls engineered a pack-running, come from behind victory with Triya Roy, Sarah Feng, Sylvana Northrop and Sanjana Borle all in the top 10. The frosh-soph boys had a dominating start to their victory as Sahil Goal, Justin Yu and Matthew Sun came in 1-2-3; all three of these boys were fighting all the way until the finish line. Andrew Cole and Jason Yip both in the top 15 to finish the 29-37 team win over second place Lynbrook. The JV boys took a nice third place finish with Darren Yang, Alex Richardson and Tyler Liu all in the top 10. The JV girls closed out the day with a dramatic win that looked a lot like a dual meet for a while; the first eight finishers were all LG or MV (LG-MV-LG-MV-LG-MV-MV-MV until a Lynbrook runner got home). Jannah Sheriff, Rachel Jiang, Vivian Lau, Elisabeth Hsu, Anoushka Lakshmi and Vibhaa Iyengar were all in the top 10 as MVXC took home a 27-42 win. These young Monta Vista and Los Gatos runners could have exciting duels for the next four years, pushing each other for a lot of success!
While this is an early season meet, there were still quite a few PRs. Monta Vista recorded 22 improvements out of 42 chances (52%), which was better than the last time we opened SCVAL at Lynbrook in 2013 when we were 13 of 33 (39%). I feel like this team is getting it’s race legs under them and this result supports that feeling. Individual PRs are listed in the table below.
