Monta Vista Cross Country had a beautiful day for our introduction to the historic Crystal Springs course. We head to the Crystal Preview ready to both run hard, but also to prepare ourselves for league championships. Leagues are back here at Crystal in only four weeks (don’t forget to order your championship t-shirt)!
Under a clear sky, breezy but not too hot, our Varsity 2 boys lead off the day. Darren Yang rolled in with a 18:38 on the hilly 2.95 mile course, as the team put MVXC on top early with 69 points and a first place finish. In the second race, our lead four freshman put on a show as Andrew, Rohun, Sid and Jason went 2-3-9-10 to power a second place team finish in the frosh race; not just these four, the whole freshman team is showing a lot of spirit and we see great things for this group!
The Varsity 2 girls race had our top five in a tight back, 20 seconds from the MVXC 1st to 5th, as Vibha, Avishi, Victoria, Claire Lin and Sabrina powered the team to a 5th place finish. As our group speeds up, they will prove to be a real threat in the SCVAL JV championships. The sophomore boys were again paced by Jeff Flewelling with an 18:53 as the team ran to a 6th place finish.
Our varsity teams both looked strong. The boys ground out a third place finish with a 46 second gap, and Jeffrey Xu got onto the MV all-time list at Crystal Springs with his 16:24. The varsity girls finished a tight second to Palo Alto with Sarah Feng, Claire Chang and Triya Roy coming in with two seconds of each other and all under that magic 20 minute mark.
MVXC recorded an impressive number of PRs, particularly since our primary goal was run smart early and to learn and re-learn the nature of the Crystal course. Clearly MVXC is both fit and figured out the tricks that Crystal has! William Zhang and Alicia Chen topped our list of improvements.
