Our first league dual meet at Homestead marked the first competition of the year for most of our athletes…and while we did not win any divisions as a team, we had many great races and results!
Ariel Martin and Chris Ma were the high scorers for Monta Vista, with 10 points each. Ariel’s points came from winning both the triple jump (with a PR) and the long jump, and Chris scored his wins in the two hurdle races. Jenny Xu and Rochish Ambati racked up 6 points each with two second place finishes (Jenny in the varsity girls’ 1600m and 800m, Rochish in the frosh-soph boys 100m and 200m).
Two new jumpers made big marks already. Freshman James Migdal cleared 5’8″ in his first high school meet; last year, 5’6″ was the winning high jump for frosh-soph boys in league finals! Junior Richelle Ju cleared 4’8″ in her first high jump, and we only had a few jumps higher than that all last year. High jump coach Rick Blomquist says they are just getting started!
Other notable performances included Julia Chang’s 12:18 in the 32oom, a 40 second PR over last year; Ajay Rajimani with a 6 second PR in the 800, and freshman Brent Mogensen’s debut 3200 in 10:43.

Next up…our first home dual meet in years and years, the first Monta Vista home meet for your coaches and for all of you, ever! Let’s get ready to host our first races ever on the new Monta Vista track, competing against Cupertino. Bring your friends and family!
A summary of Monta Vista’s scoring is listed below. Please note that in dual meets, there are often opportunities to pick up points in events that may not be your focus. For example, in the VG 400m last week, there were only two athletes running; so if you had entered that race, you were guaranteed 3rd place and a point for Monta Vista. In VG high jump there were 2 spots available and 4 points left hanging. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and try something new, you might find something that you are good at, and you may be able to help your team!
