With personal records galore, Monta Vista had a fantastic day at El Camino League finals, held at the beautiful Fremont High School facility on Wednesday, May 2.

I’ll say up front, I couldn’t keep up with all the great performances coming so fast and furious, but here are a few of the highlights:

>Senior Ryan Chui throwing down a 16.21 in the 110M hurdles, setting what I believe is a PR in his last league meet for Monta Vista.

>Hurdler Allison Win also ran what I believe is a PR with an 18.20 in the 100M hurdles, moving her on to SCVALs in her senior year.

>Rohan Choudhury and Zach Patti had no-doubt PRs in the 3200, their 10:19.46 and 10:34.41 times improved by 20 and 40 seconds their previous bests, and were part of their double-podium performances in the 1600 and 3200.  The finishes of their races were two of the most exciting finishes of the meet!

>Lavinia Fung finished her first year on the MV track & field team by breaking 30′ in the TJ in league finals…with a 30′ 1/4″ on her final jump of the year…what a way to finish the season!

>Arvind Rao made a big step in his stellar senior season with a 1:58 flat clocking in the 800M.  Improvements come grudgingly when an athlete gets under 2 minutes in the 800, and Arvind’s time was almost 2 seconds below his previous best.

>Arvind also anchored the 4x400M relay, and the team with Surafael Yared, Bumpei Maeda, and Michael Lu ran a season best 3:32.71.

>Sanjna Bharadwaj started the season injured, yet she perservered.  Sanjna tried the high jump because her injury would not let her run…and she ended her season winning the JV girls high jump with a 4’4″ leap!

>Kevin Bishop had a memorable last league meet with a repeat of his 1600-3200 double win, including one of the easiest 9:20s I’ve ever seen run in the 3200.

There were plenty of more great efforts across the board…I know I am missing some great throws, runs and jumps!

As a team, we showed overall improvement, with 178 points scored across all four divisions compared to 112.5 points last year.  The biggest jump was made by our JV girls, who scored 35 points compared to only 3 points in 2011.

Monta Vista also has many athletes moving on to the SCVAL Qualifier meet.

Congratulations, athletes!  You worked hard all season and had the opportunity to cash in on all your workout deposits.  Well done!
