Many Medals Makes Matadors Merry

The Monta Vista Track & Field team were well represented at the 44th CCS Top Invitation this past Saturday at Los Gatos High School. We had 16 athletes compete in this elite meet and we brought home 11 medals total! Even better than medals, we punched in 7 new PRs!!! This was a very long day, so a huge thank you to Coach Sciplin for being there from the first one’s to compete to the very last. We’ll do things a bit differently today and take a look at the performances of each person who competed.

We got the day started with the frosh/soph boys 4x100m relay of Max Shaykin, Aaryan Samanta, Constantine Chua, and Jeffrey Choy. They clocked an awesome time of 47.19 to place 10th overall. After than Chua ran in the 65m hurdles to match that 10th place finish with a time of 10.91. Then, the boys came back for the 4x400m relay with a team of Jonah Chang, Chua, Samanta, and Choy to run a fantastic time of 3:45.86 to finish in 8th place overall – this is the best f/s boys time of the year! In the field for the morning session, Viha Gopalan got things started with a nice jump of 14′ 4″ in the long jump to earn a 10th place finish, plus a 9th place finish in the triple jump with a jump of 31′ 7″ which matches her PR! Eddie Fan took a 16th place finish in the triple jump after getting bumped off the alternate list, followed by another 16th spot in the shot put, and then got within a foot of earning a medal in the discus throw with a toss of 118′ 8″ to earn 7th place. Adam Abdelrahman placed just behind Fan in the discus throw with a 117′ throw for 8th place, and also earned a 3rd place medal in the shot put with a toss of 44′ 10″. Allie Rummelhoff light things up in the field for the morning session with a 4th place, 32′ 9″ mark in the triple jump, a 3rd place toss in the discus throw of 97′ 5″, and finally a win in the shot put with a big PR of 33′ 10″!

The afternoon session saw some great performances from our Varsity athletes. Kicking things off was Tanay Parikh in the 1600m – there was a timing issue for him, unfortunately, so we do not have his place or his time. He came back later in the day to run to a 14th place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:04.99. Next, Zoe Laruelle ran to a new PR in the 100m hurdles of 17.23, earning a 13th place finish! Later, she earned a medal in the triple jump with another PR of 35′ 7″ and 6th place. Her sister, Lelani Laruelle earned a 3rd place in the long jump with a new PR of 17′ 11″, and took top honors in the high jump with a 5′ 6″! Clara Fan competed in four events, which is an achievement of it’s own at this meet! She placed 13th in the shot put with 31′ 4″, 2nd in the high jump with 5′ 4″, 2nd in the triple jump with 37′ 8.5″, and 2nd in the long jump with a new PR of 18′ 6″, which is a NEW SCHOOL RECORD!!! To round things out for the very long day in Los Gatos, Anika Bhandarkar rocked the 3200m for a new PR of 11:13.98 to earn a 9th place finish overall!

I am very proud of the way this limited group competed this weekend! I think we’ll have a lot of momentum to take into the end of the season, and hopefully we can see these folks again at the really CCS meet in May!
