“Grit is sticking with your future—day in, day out, not just for a week, not just for a month, but for years—and working really hard to make that future a reality.” — Angela Duckworth
First off–you are AWESOME already! You are about to join a team that can change your life (really!). Now, here is how you get ready to be part of the Monta Vista Cross Country team in 2022:
Start running now so that you are prepared for the start of practice! There will be student-athlete lead summer running; summer running meets on the Monta Vista High School track at 7am, Monday through Saturday. We start summer running on June 6, but you should join as soon as you read this 🙂 There will be experienced and friendly MVXC athletes to help you get started!
There is school paperwork you need to take care of before you join a sport. Follow the instructions on this link so that you are ready for the first practice in August! No one may join a formal team practice without completing all this paperwork and being cleared.
Schedule your physical with your doctor right away. There is a form your doctor must complete and you must return to the school (see step 1 above). Your doctor will get busier and busier completing this forms as the start of school gets closer so make your appointment now–if you can’t get your physical complete, you can’t join the team. Plus, it’s smart to get a physical every year.
Please, please, PLEASE ask your doctor for a serum ferritin test. Iron levels are very important for young distance runners. A serum ferritin test helps understand your iron levels. While iron levels are not critical for athletes in all sports, low iron levels in runners can cause runners to recover slowly and feel ‘dead-legged’. Often, young athletes feel like they are simply not good runners and end up quitting because running seems so hard, when maybe their low iron levels were causing them to not enjoy running. Read this article and the links from that article, and consider getting your iron level tested!
